The 10 Korean Beauty Commandments

I admit that there are times when I’m too tired or too lazy to properly take good care of my skin, and I know a lot of women are guilty of doing the same, too. The good news is having a youthful and glowing skin is easy to achieve in just ten to fifteen minutes through the Korean way. They have effective solutions to every skincare concern and their products come in classy and cute packaging, so there’s no reason to skip your beauty session every day.

Follow these ten skincare commandments and stop committing those skin sins now; your journey to a better skin starts right today.

Never go to sleep without removing make-up. The first step to achieving a radiant and blemish-free skin is removing all traces of makeup that you wore during the day. Relying on facial cleanser alone will not ensure you clogged-free pores, so use a good makeup remover to gently remove eye make-up, foundation, and sunscreen.

Use the right type of cleanser for your skin. If you think that using any kind of facial cleanser is alright – as long as it has the word ‘cleanser’ on it – then you might want to consider changing it. Using the wrong cleanser for your skin type might not bring any benefits to your skin and might even cause breakouts. Here’s a quick tip: look for cleansers with low pH, as this will retain your skin’s moisture and acne-fighting abilities. Gently massage the cleanser on your face using circular motions, starting from your chin and moving upwards to your T-zone.

Banish blackheads with an exfoliator. Exfoliating your face removes dead skin cells and prevents clogged pores which cause the annoying blackheads and whiteheads on your nose, so it’s an important part of your beauty routine that you should not skip. Experts recommend exfoliating your skin weekly, but using a konjac sponge is ideal for everyday exfoliation.

Toners should always come after the cleanser. Like the make-up remover, you should not rely on cleansers alone to deeply remove the dirt on your skin, so using a toner is necessary after cleansing. Toners restore your skin’s pH balance and remove any residue that your cleanser failed to eliminate. Choose one with natural ingredients such as fermented bamboo extracts which will help cleanse and refresh your skin.

Target your skincare needs with essence and ampoule. Essences and ampoules are skincare products with high doses of active ingredients like hyaluronic acid which hydrates the skin and makes it smoother and brighter. Pat the essence and ampoule gently on your face to treat specific skincare concerns such as firmness, hydration, and fine lines.

Pampering your skin weekly with sheet masks is a must. Sheet masks may be cloth, paper, hydrogel, sea kelp, or cellulose masks soaked with skincare ingredients. The sheet increases penetration and prevents the moisture and nutrients from evaporating. Think of it as a twice-a-week skin treat that makes your skin softer, smoother, and brighter. It’s such a great pick-me-up!

Don’t forget your eyes. As the old saying goes, the eyes are the window to the soul, so don’t let your window be tainted with dark under-eye circles and fine lines. Pat eye cream under your eyes and around the inner and outer corners where wrinkles tend to form. Make sure to be very gentle when you apply skincare products to prevent sagging of the sensitive skin under your eyes.

Moisturizers are your everyday best friend. Your beauty routine should not end on keeping your skin squeaky-clean. Don’t go about your day with a dry skin – use a moisturizer to increase your skin’s moisture level and to act as a barrier from environmental pollutants that could potentially cause breakouts and irritation. Massage the moisturizer on your face for at least a minute or two so it truly penetrates your skin.

Lock in all the moisture with a night cream. Using a moisturizer isn’t enough to keep your skin hydrated as you sleep. Apply a night cream which will lock in the moisture from your treatments while you’re taking your beauty rest, so you will wake up in the morning to a bright, dewy skin.

Protect your skin from the sun. One of the culprits for early skin aging is excessive exposure to the sun. Applying sunscreen every day (whether the sun is shining or not) is a cardinal rule to avoid damage from the sun’s UV rays. The best way to sun-proof yourself is to find a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before applying your make-up.

Final Note: These steps are not set in stone – some might work for you, while some might not be necessary anymore. How you choose to take care of your skin is all up to you, but if you wish to have a healthier, more dewy skin, then these ten steps will definitely get you there.
