Tip 1: Tired of waiting out the long lines in the dressing room? Find out if a pair of jeans fits you without trying it on with this fashion hack from Lauren Edelstein: wrap the waist of the jeans around your neck, and if the ends meet without overlapping or stretching, then it will fit your waist too. “…I was skeptical about [it], but it really works!” This is one time-saving trick that any stylist and star fashion designer (and now you!) know about.
Tip 2: Take this tip from star fashion designer Rebecca Taylor: “Wear heels even though they kill you! Seriously! They look good.” The key to surviving the day in these beautiful but agonizing footwear? “All the girls in my office show up in their flats and then put heels on at the office. That’s the trick.”
Tip 3: Build a great outfit using only three key pieces. Heidi Nazarudin from The Ambitionista shares her fashion tip emphasizes that you don’t need much to jazz up your look; you only need “A face-flattering pair of classic sunglasses, a gorgeous everyday leather handbag, and a smart pair of shoes you can easily walk in.” Combine these three with any outfit and you’re sure to up your style.
Tip 4: Follow this classic advice from star fashion designer James Mischka and Mark Badgley of Badgley Mischka: “The most important thing is making sure your clothes fit well. Have them tailored to you. You can make the most mediocre piece of clothing look great if it fits you well. So, save a little bit of money for beautiful alterations. If your clothes fit well, you always look like a million bucks.” Your dresses, jeans, blazers, and blouses will look good no matter what season it is as long as it fits you perfectly.
Tip 5: One of the misconceptions about fashion is that you have to have a walk-in closet full of designer duds to be able to dress well. Nazarudin says, “Every woman really only needs 20 core items in her closet. A black pair of pants, a blue blazer, a cashmere V-neck sweater in a jewel tone, and so on.” If you already have these 20 basic pairs of clothes and some versatile pieces as well, you can try out other designs with inexpensive price tags so you won’t regret it if you don’t like it. Tip 6: One of the most repeated advice from stylists and star fashion designer in dressing up? Accessories are your best friends. It will instantly add a classy, polished look to any outfit if you choose the right ones. If you don’t want to look sloppy by just wearing jeans and T-shirt, elevate your look by wearing eye-catching earrings, a statement necklace, or a chunky bracelet, stylist Michelle Combs advices. A funky bag or a pair of neon-colored shoes will also make a basic outfit stand out and look fun.
Tip 7: Know your body type and dress accordingly, star fashion designer Alice Temperley or Temperley London recommends. “If you try something on and you don’t feel it, it’s not for you. If you don’t look good in a bright color, don’t go there. If you don’t look good in a low-cut dress, don’t do it. No matter what designer or trend, if you understand what your body shape is, that’s what you should wear. Create your own wardrobe that really suits you as an individual.” For example, for petite girls, don’t wear boxy clothes that will overwhelm your small frame. For women with athletic body types, clothes that are defined at the waist will add curves to your shape.
Tip 8: Star fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff tells us her timeless fashion tip: “Invest in one good piece of timeless clothing you are proud of. Saving up for that one something special will likely last way longer and never go out of style so you can wear it season after season and feel good in it!” Looking for a versatile and classic piece of footwear? Black, pointed-toe heels will look good in any season and goes well with almost everything in your closet.
Tip 9: If you want to wear a bright color but are hesitant or afraid, don’t fret! Nazarudin advices to incorporate a bright color to your outfit gradually by wearing it as an accessory first. For example, lemon-colored sunglasses or hot pink nail polish will add a pop of color to your outfit without being the center of attention. You can also wear necklaces, scarves, or even socks in bright colors if you don’t want to wear it as a top or bottom yet.
Tip 10: Aside from wearing pieces that fit you, wear clothes that you’re comfortable in, according to star fashion designer Phillipe and David Blond from The Blonds. “Always be yourself! It’s about collecting pieces you love and incorporating them in ways that fit your own personal style. Wear clothing that makes you feel amazing because that is what fashion is all about!”
