Elevate your little black dress. The little black dress, or LBD, is a closet staple that every woman should have. It’s a very versatile piece of clothing that is simple but can be dressed up or down according to your mood. Elevate a simple LBD into a stylish fashion dress with colorful shoes, eye-catching bags, or asymmetrical jackets.
Channel vintage pieces. Take a cue from the dainty ladies of the ‘70s and ‘80s by channeling vintage outfits and adding a modern feel into it. A black turtleneck tucked into printed skirt and a pair of cute heels is a classic, no-fail look.
Play with colors. You don’t have to stick to monochrome and neutrals just because you have a hard time mixing and matching colors. Combine a neutral colored outfit with a bold one. Or pick two colors that are on the same color palette, or beside each other in the color wheel. Keep experimenting on combining colors on fashion dresses and you’ll get it perfect in no time at all.
Mix prints and patterns together. Combining prints and patterns is possible – and you don’t have to look like a fashion disaster while doing it. Just like mixing colors, it takes practice and a good eye in selecting the best ones that will look good together. Mix fashion dresses in prints with the same color combination, or combine large patterns with smaller ones.
Earn your stripes. Stripes are a classic print that never goes out of style, and it adds graphic to your look. You can pair a striped top with a pencil skirt in a serious cut, or wear a red-striped dress and pair it with white and navy blue for a nautical look.
White goes a long way. Aside from the LBD, we also have the LWD – the little white dress – that can also go with anything in your closet. Pair a lacey LWD with wedges for a feminine look, or wear a form-fitting LWD with sneakers for an unusual twist.
Two words: nude pumps. The right pair of pumps is a great closet investment because you can wear it to work, parties, or nights-out. A pair of nude pumps makes your legs look longer and slimmer.
Brands matter. If you find a great-fitting fashion dress from a particular brand, you might want to consider shopping in there from now on. Brands (especially designer ones) tend to use the same model scale in their clothing line, so if you find a perfectly-fitting clothing, chances are, you won’t have a hard time shopping for similar ones.
Don’t rush the fitting process. When it comes to dresses, especially bodycon and form-fitting ones, you should take your time in the dressing room. Examine every angle, see if it’s too skimpy or too long, think of the existing pieces in your closet that you can pair it with, and on what occasions you can wear it to.
Know your body type. This will help you shop for fashion dresses that fit you better. For example, if you have broad shoulders, flaunt them by wearing strapless dresses with a flowy bottom to balance out your shape. If you’re petite, avoid wearing boxy dresses that will overwhelm your figure; shift dresses and dresses that are defined at the waist are your best friends.
Take care of your clothes. This isn’t exactly a fashion advice, but it’s basically a fashion commandment: nothing beats taking care of your garments. It doesn’t matter if you own an expensive designer piece or a local brand, it’s how you wear it with confidence, and how you take care of it so it lasts for a long time.
Invest in clutch bags. Wearing fashion dresses don’t really look great if you’re lugging around a bag, and sometimes the bag can draw attention away from the dress. Use clutch bags with eye-catching embellishments and stylish designs; it’s chic enough to catch attention but will complement your outfit.
Wear a scarf. If the weather is a bit chilly but you don’t want to wear a jacket or cardigan, opt for a colorful scarf. Maxi dresses look really wonderful with scarves.
Get a dress in multiple pieces. Why not? If it hugs you in the right places and is versatile, get the fashion dress in multiple pieces. O better yet, get it in different colors.
Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Not a fan of brightly colored dresses and bold patterns? Start by incorporating these styles into your accessories instead. A pair of neon shoes, statement necklaces, a printed belt, or an eye-catching hat will add a hint of color and subtle personality to your outfit.
White button-downs never go out of style. This has been reiterated so many times before, but we’ll say it again: white button-downs are a closet classic. White button-down shirtdresses are even more so. Pair your button-down with a serious skirt, or with a flowy one in cute patterns – the combinations are (almost) limitless.
Show some skin. But in a strategic way. If you’re wearing a dress that shows your cleavage, don’t flaunt your legs too much. If you’re wearing a short dress that highlights your legs, you can opt for a long-sleeved one.
